Propane Safety
At Fayetteville Propane, your safety is our top priority. Propane is a highly efficient, environmentally friendly fuel—but like any energy source, it must be handled with care. Whether you're heating your home, fueling appliances, or powering equipment, these safety guidelines are essential for protecting your family, property, and peace of mind.
Propane has a strong, unpleasant smell similar to rotten eggs—this odor is added to help you detect leaks.
If you suspect a gas leak:
Leave the area immediately. Don’t try to locate the leak yourself.
Avoid all ignition sources. Don’t flip light switches, use your phone, or start your car near the area.
Shut off the gas supply at the tank, but only if it is safe to do so.
Call 911 or Fayetteville Propane from a safe distance.
Do not return to the building or area until it has been inspected and cleared by a professional.
Even a small leak can pose a serious hazard. Never ignore the smell of gas.
Install carbon monoxide detectors and propane gas detectors. Test them regularly and replace batteries as needed.
Never use propane appliances indoors unless they are specifically designed for indoor use and properly vented.
Keep fire extinguishers on hand, especially near propane appliances or storage tanks.
Clear at least 10 feet around your tank of brush, debris, and combustible materials.
Have your propane system inspected annually by a certified technician. This includes tanks, regulators, valves, and connections.
Know where your main gas shutoff valve is located. Make sure everyone in your household knows how to turn it off in an emergency.
Use only propane appliances approved by the manufacturer and properly rated for your space.
Have appliances professionally installed and maintained. Don’t try to DIY propane hookups.
If a pilot light goes out, wait before relighting it and follow manufacturer instructions. Call a technician if you're unsure.
Never use a gas oven or stovetop for heating your home.
Store portable propane cylinders outdoors and upright, never inside garages, sheds, or enclosed areas.
Do not store spare cylinders near heat sources or in vehicles.
Always transport cylinders in a secure, upright position with valves closed.
