General Propane Questions
What is propane?
Propane (also called LP gas or liquid petroleum gas) is a safe, reliable, and environmentally friendly energy source. It is stored and transported as a liquid and converts to gas inside your tank or cylinder when used. Propane is naturally colorless and odorless, but a distinct odor is added so leaks can be easily detected. Because propane is flammable, care should always be taken to avoid open flames, sparks, or smoking near propane equipment. Propane vapors are heavier than air and may collect in low-lying areas.
What can I use propane for in my home?
Propane is a versatile energy source commonly used for home heating, water heaters, cooking, fireplaces, and clothes dryers. Outdoors, propane powers grills, patio heaters, pool and spa heaters, and lighting. During power outages, propane is often used to run standby generators.
Is propane safe for my family?
Yes. Propane is very safe when handled properly. To ensure safety:
If you smell gas, evacuate immediately and call us or the fire department from a neighbor’s phone.

Tanks, Equipment & Installation
What size propane tank do I need?
For homes using propane as a primary energy source, a 250- or 500-gallon tank typically meets the needs of an average four-bedroom home. Larger homes or businesses may require 1,000-gallon tanks or larger.
How close can my propane tank be to my house?
Most tanks must be placed at least 10 feet from a structure or ignition source. The exception is our 120-gallon tank, which can be installed directly next to a structure and is ideal for low-usage customers.
Are there alternatives to having a tank in my yard?
Underground tanks are a popular option for homeowners who prefer not to see a tank in their yard. Propane is non-toxic, making underground installation safe for soil and groundwater.
Can you convert a natural gas appliance to propane?
Yes. Many natural gas furnaces and appliances can be converted to propane using a proper conversion kit installed by a qualified technician. Contact us for details.
Tank Gauges & Fuel Levels
How do I read my propane tank gauge?
Most tanks have a gauge under the dome lid that shows the approximate percentage of propane remaining. While not exact, it’s a reliable indicator. Tanks are considered full at 80–85%, allowing room for expansion. If your gauge drops below 30%, contact us to schedule a delivery.
What happens if I run out of propane?
Running out of propane can create safety concerns and inconvenience:
Pilot lights will go out
Air and moisture can enter the tank, causing corrosion
A safety test is required by Texas law before service is restored.
These tests incur charges for will-call customers. Someone must be home for this inspection. To avoid running out, we recommend our Automatic Delivery program.
Cylinders, RVs & Specialty Services
Can you fill my cylinder during a tank delivery?
No. Cylinders must be weighed on certified scales and cannot be filled from delivery trucks. We can fill cylinders at our Fayetteville and Brenham locations.
